A FLIGHT OF FANTASY
FIRSTWORKS NEW ART CENTER &
CREATIVE CULTURE REVIVAL
Providence, RI
“"Experience and identity are also becoming increasingly important within the physical urban environment… That is also how a city constructs an identity in which, ideally, citizen can recognize themselves and feel at home, while visitors feel made welcome. Culture, and by extension the creative industry, is a key element in urban redevelopment.”
Paul Rutten
As Rutten notes, this project embraces and illustrates this idea through the adaptive reuse of an existing space to design a new art center for Firstworks which is an energetic arts organization in Providence.
The Degree Project will provide a practical, organizational workspace, and a cultural intersection that encourages mass participation in artistic activities as expressed by the mission of FirstWorks, also re-evaluates how the design can define this organization’s identity which serves as a center of hospitality, vitality and creativity with all of us.
The art center will contains a performing art space, visual art space, galleries, and multifunctional public plaza to support Firstworks various cultural events.
